Before Your Vow of Purity
Read What God Says In These Verses
1. Read Romans 12:1-2. It explains your promise.
You're gifting yourself for the entire time you're on this earth,
as a "
" to God, holy and acceptable. You're promising not to be "
to this world." From now on you won't take your cues on how
to look, talk and act from your friends but from God's Word
and from your conscience.
2. Read Jonah 2:9. Jonah had made a vow to be
God's servant, preaching His message anytime and anywhere, but
when God sent him to Ninevah, Jonah said, "No way!" You probably
already know how Jonah was punished, but if you aren't familiar
with this story, take time to read the short book of Jonah.
Then fill what Jonah learned (Jonah 2:9), "…I will pay that
3. Read Job 22:27-8. When you make a promise,
God hears you, and that the thing you have vowed, "shall be
unto thee: and the light shall shine upon thy vows." That means
once you've vowed it, you can't take it back.
4. Whether a lowly shepherd boy or a mighty king,
David remained a man after God's own heart, the Bible tells
us. One way he kept His heart pure was by making and fulfilling
vows to the Lord. In Psalms 22:25, David wrote "…I will
before them that fear Him."
5. Ecclesiastes 5:2-7 shows us the seriousness
of making a vow to God. Think about what you're promising, because
you're going to be bound by that promise for the rest of your
life. "Be not
with thy mouth, and let not thine
to utter any thing before God...When thou vowest a vow unto
God, defer not to
; for He hath no pleasure in fools: pay that which thou hast
vowed. Better it is that thou shoudest
, than that thou shouldest
...wherefore should God be
at thy voice…?"
6. Read Proverbs 2:16-19. As soon as you take
this vow, the devil will try to discredit and discourage you.
The last thing that he wants is a radical Christian using her
life and talents to point others to God. He'll give you seemingly
irresistible opportunities to degrade your God-given abilities
and smear your testimony in the pursuit of money and popularity.
The very ungodly, adulterous woman in this story didn't start
out bad, but she turned her back on "the
of her youth," and she forgot "the
of her God." Learn to recognize this picture of failure and
don't copy Hollywood icons who've become the "strange woman"
of Proverbs 2.
Ok, it's your turn. Below is a sample purity prayer
that you can make to God. If you have printing capabilities,
you may wish to print the form, fill in your name and today's
date and save your promise as a lasting reminder of your decision.
, promise on this day,
, that I give myself to You, God. I want to be pure like You
wish me to be. I will obey You every day in everything to the
best of my ability. When I sin, I will admit that I was wrong
and tell You I'm sorry, and I know that You will forgive me
and give me a fresh, clean start. As of right now, my sinful
habits are history. I'm going to make new habits based on the
instructions for living found in the Bible. Please, God, help
me to keep this promise. I know that I can't do it without Your
help. Thank You. Amen.
