Chapter Two

Carol grumbled as she rolled over and hit the snooze button. Her friend, Joanne, lay snoring on the floor nearby. Carol knew from past experience that only one thing could wake her sleeping friend…
"Girls, breakfast is ready!" Mrs. Linburgh called up the steps.
"Breakfast!" Joanne suddenly sat straight up and wiggled out of her sleeping bag. She walked over to Carol and stared at her with big owl eyes. "Come on, Carol. I'm hungry!"
Carol groaned and whacked her friend in the face with her pillow.
"Why, you…!" Joanne plunked herself down onto Carol and started to wrestle her when the second call for breakfast came. "I'll get you later!" Joanne yelled as she ran out of the room.
Carol giggled and raced after her. Her parents hadn't been breathing down her neck as much within the past two days, but they didn't know that she'd sneaked away Monday night after they were asleep, either. And Carol wasn't about to tell them any time soon.
Carol skidded into the kitchen a split second behind her friend, and soon they were sitting down to sizzling bacon, hash browns, scrambled eggs and toast. Carol's parents bowed their heads to pray.
Surprised, Carol realized that she didn't mind her parents' new mealtime habit. During the prayer, she sneaked a peek at her friend and was again amazed that Joanne didn't seem bothered by this, either. Were they both warming to this "religion" stuff? Surely not!
After breakfast the girls threw on some clothes and ran next door to Joanne's. As they clambered up the steps to Joanne's room, Carol spoke.
"Joanne, this might sound weird, but could we leave the music off today?" Joanne stopped at the top of the staircase and turned to make eye contact with her best friend. "I guess so."

"Thanks. I haven't been listening to it that much lately," Carol said as they plopped down on Joanne's bed. "I wonder why that is. I mean, I haven't been wanting to listen to it like I used to."
Joanne studied her friend intently. "What's up with you?"
Carol sighed and looked up at Joanne. "I don't know. I just don't feel right about what we did Monday night. You know, sneaking out without our parents' permission."
Joanne stared at her friend. "What's your problem? It wasn't our first time doing it, and we didn't get caught...unless you're planning to get religious and tell on us."
Carol heard the warning in her friend's tone. "No, of course not."
"Then stop being stupid and let's go shopping." Joanne playfully smacked Carol's head with her pillow, and suddenly the friendship was restored.
After hours at the mall, Carol walked through her front door to find her parents waiting for her. Instead of being mad about her missing dinner, they greeted her with a surprise...a new CD.
"Cool!" Carol said as she picked it up. Then her face registered confusion. "Committed? What group are they?"
"Just something new we thought you'd like," her dad, Kenneth, answered. "I want you to promise me that you'll listen to this group at least once a week for a month; then your mother and I want to know what you think about it--deal?"
Carol thought a minute. This was a group she'd never heard of... might as well try them out, she figured. If she didn't like their music, well, at least she only had to listen to it once a week for a month, then she could throw it out. "Deal."
She took the CD up to her room and slipped it into her CD player. Little did she know, her parents were downstairs praying for her as she hit the play button.
